Mountains of Britain

I'm a bit of a Geography nerd, so this is just my cup of tea.  I really am a Geography (& French) teacher beneath the surface.

A few years ago, the BBC commissioned a 5 part TV series featuring the Mountains of Great Britain.  OK - it's got very little to do with motorbikes (except I make a 30 second appearance in episode 2),  BUT - these are stunning areas in our National Parks, and exactly the places you'd want to visit by motorcycle.   In fact in Episode 2, the film shows exactly where I take my guests on my Best of Three Tours; Hardknott Pass, the Roman Fort, Wasdale, Honister Pass & the slate mine.  The programme on The Pennines also includes The Yorkshire Dales and parts of the Peak District National Park. Again, where my "Best of Three" tours go to.

Amazon UK are virtually giving away this 5 part series on DVD now;  just £3.97 and free delivery!  Click here to order a copy or see more detail.  It was over £30 originally, but having been shown on UK TV several times, it's now in the bargains section.

Incidentally, there may be 1 or 2 slots left on my May Best of Three trip (21-23 May 2010) due to a cancellation.  It had been full, as usual.  Get in touch if you'd like to join us.

I just watched episode 1 again - Wales - Snowdonia.  It brought great memories flooding back of walking the Snowdon Horseshoe & Crib Goch with our intrepid Geography teacher, Mick Hopkinson (kayaker extraordinnaire - first descents of the Blue Nile in Ethiopia, and Dudh Khosi & Sun Khosi rivers in Nepal).  This was a man who inspried me to go out into the world and do adventurous things actually. Someone who made me realise there was far more to life than the mainstream sports such as football, that dominate TV.

Also great memories of climbing Tryfan one cold clear Winter day with Clare, Graham & Tracy. Those arresting views down to Lyn Ogwen way below are unforgettable.  So was camping beside a frozen river than night, a bottle of cider froze and the toothpaste froze - INSIDE our VW campervan.

Ha! the yellow T'bird in the photo. That's the one I was going to ride on this year's April Best of Three tour; but rather embarrassingly, it broke down in the hotel carpark even before we set off. Alarm malfunction.  No problem, bring out the spare bike, the Fazer.  Many photos now on the Bike Tours UK Facebook group.
