The Triumph Owners Club (TOMCC) annual Easter Egg Run, takes place from Bottesford (Leicestershire) on Sunday 28th March at 11:00am (get there a bit before for a brew, and a bacon sarnie).
Come on guys & girls - you should do this one. Why?
1. It's an excuse to get your bikes out for perhaps one of the first runs of the year.
2. It's to help others.
You're reading this, so you have a computer, and a broadband subscription. You probably have a motorcycle, and even if it's an old snotter - it's a lot more than a lot of other people have. Give something back this Easter, to those less fortunate than yourselves.
John Bartlett (01789 762531) is an absolute Star, who has organised this charity event for many many years. Nottm City Council didn't appreciate the effort we all put into this - so sadly the Nottingham Run no longer exists. ('Elf & Safety, ya know) All the more reason to support Leicestershire! Let them benefit from your kindness and gifts of Easter Eggs instead. Easter Eggs are distributed to those may have little else to look forward this Easter.
Here's how it goes....
1. Go out to Tesco's and buy 2 or 3 nice Easter eggs (or more). Get a few mates to do the same.
2. On Sunday morning 28th March, dress up in something stupid if you wish, then join your mates for a ride out to Bottesford. Riding a TRIUMPH is a particularly noble way to do this, but any make of bike will do. Even trikes, sidecars and scooters are all welcome.
3. Meet in the Red Lion car park some time before 11:00am. You can't miss it - there may be 500-1000 motorcyclists already there, chatting away, meeting old friends & stuffing their faces. Bottesford is about half way between Nottingham and Grantham, just off the A52.
4. When The Man says it's time to go, a massive motorcycle procession winds its way to Grantham, some 10 miles away. It's quite a site, and Maggie's old town is lined with folks coming out to cheer and wave us along. It's make you feel quite proud actually - really part of something Good. Many riders take their kids along as well. I do. It doesn't hurt for them to see good folks doing something for nothing.
5. We finish up at Mere's Leisure Centre, where there is a Civic Reception awaiting us. The Mayor himself normally turns out in person to shake the hand of every biker bearing gifts. A rare thing these days. Hot Coffee, Tea & snacks are served - greatly appreciated if we've turned out in rain, wind or snow. We hand in our Easter eggs and get a little tiny sticker to say we've been there. VIPs say thank you, and a few others jump on the bandwagon to try & promote other similar events. Then we leave.
6. But here's the good bit. If you want an injection of even warmer self satisfaction, join one of the sub-groups who often get together to personally deliver rations of Eggs to various childrens' homes, old folks' home and various institutions. It doesn't always work out this way, but to go along and see the faces & excitement when all these strangely-clad bikers turn up, on wondrous shiny machines, bearing gifts for Easter.... well......... it brings a tear to your eye.
See you there. More details from John, below, if needed. |
